Amman Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Project

Detailed Description of Project

Mouchel and Orient were appointed by Miyahuna water company to undertake a non-revenue water (NRW) pilot project for one of the Distribution Zones; i.e.: DZ18. The objective of the project was to determine the NRW by cause according to IWA categories; and to enable Miyahuna to assess the pilot outputs in order to undertake a long-term performance based NRW reduction contract.

The objectives of this project were:

  • Quantify NRW by cause according to IWA categories as accurately as possible
  • Enable Miyahuna to assess the capabilities and performance of the Contractor with regards to its suitability to undertake long term NRW reduction contract

The main deliverables of the project were to include:

  • A final report that quantifies NRW by cause, and provides estimates of the remediation costs for each category of NRW by cause. The final report to be submitted only after Miyahuna staff and selected advisors have had the opportunity to read and submit comments on the draft of the final report, and have such comments incorporated into the final report. Comments made by Miyahuna staff and selected advisors are to be made within a maximum term of 30 days.
  • Reduction of NRW in all categories as time and budget allows
  • Monthly progress reports
  • Data to allow Miyahuna staff to update the GIS in the pilot area, in formats to be specified by Miyahuna
  • Data on customers to allow Miyahuna staff to update the customer and financial systems, such as illegal use, metering and errors in Miyahuna’s customer database, in formats to be specified.
  • Reporting to Miyahuna of all illegal connections found

Type of Services Provided

  • Develop initial and periodic water balance
  • Ensure districts are hydraulically isolated
  • Detect and fix leaks in the local distribution system and at house connections, up to the customer meters
  • Identify and locate redundant pipes
  • Determine and decommission illegal connections
  • Improve bulk and customers’ meter performance through testing and refitting poorly installed meters
  • Propose customer meters specs
  • Undertake pressure management through installing more PRVs and zoning
  • Update the GIS and customer database based on the field verification
  • Determine NRW rate as:
    • Percentage (Total and by Category)
    • Liter/connection/day under supply
    • m3/km/day under supply
    • m3/hour under supply
